On the way there, we passed the wave pool, Melt-Away Bay, and this immediately drew some comments from the boys.*
?Is that s?posed to be like the Surf Pool at the other water park?? Glen asked.*
?Yes, that?s the wave pool at this location.?*
?But the waves aren?t nearly as big here,? Laine pointed out.*
?Yes, they?re much gentler at this location.?*

?When that time comes I?ll give you a choice, but for now I want you to follow me to the first attraction.?
Each of the waterslides at Runoff Rapids is different and they?re all supposedly propelled by the runoff of the melting snow on Mount Gushmore, so of course the boys wanted to take a turn on each one.* The center waterslide is completely enclosed, although pinholes of sunlight are able to penetrate the darkness as it snakes its way down the slope.* The other two waterslides are completely open and wind their way over, under, and around the center slide, and then they all empty into the same splash pool at the bottom.* Each waterslide is approximately 600 feet (183 m) of twists and turns before it?s over.*
The boys decided to do this in order this time, going from the right, and then the center, and finally the left slide, rather than riding on the two open slides first and then the enclosed one afterward.* Once we?d gone down the first one, we all met up again at the bottom.*
?That was fun,? Jamie commented.*
?Yeah, I liked it,? Caleb concurred.*

Before taking our turns, however, there was some discussion about who was going to race whom.* In the end, Jamie and Caleb decided to go down at the same time, and since Laine wanted to race me, Dakota and Glen faced off next.* I believe nearly every one of our heats were basically a tie, although you couldn?t tell that from the trash talking that took place once the race ended.*
?Do you want to do this again, or move on to the next ride?? I asked interrupting their playful banter.
?It was fun, but it was kinda short and didn?t last very long, so I?m ready to go to the next ride,? Dakota answered.*
When the other boys concurred, I led them to the Snow Stormers ride next, which is also on the Purple Slopes.* This time we were going to ride on our bellies on a toboggan style mat and fly head first down the slope, which is 350 feet (106.7m) long.* Once again, it was set up like a downhill race course and we?d speed through the flag marked ?slalom? gates on our way to the bottom. *There were three distinct slopes, and of course the boys wanted to try out each one.* *
After we?d climbed to the top, we quickly discovered that all three waterslides started out from the same location, so three of us went down at the same time, although it wasn?t a race.*

This time the attraction had eight separate lanes so we could all go down at the same time, but I wasn?t about to do this on eight separate occasions.* Instead, I agreed to do it three times, and the first time we would go down the six lanes starting on the right.* The next time we?d use the six lanes starting on the left, and the final time the six lanes in the middle.* The boys felt this was satisfactory, and as we made our first trip down the 250 foot (76.2 m) slope we discovered each lane had three exhilarating drops.* **
?That was fun,? Caleb said as we were making our way to the last ride on the Purple Slopes.*

The menu wasn?t anything fancy and we all ordered some sort of sandwich to eat, and each one came with chips.* When we finished, we all had a waffle cone with either a scoop of hard ice cream or soft-serve for dessert.* Once we?d devoured those, I gave the boys a choice. *
?We can either spend time in the wave pool or we can take a tube ride around Cross Country Creek, so which would you rather do??
?The wave pool looks lame, so what?s that other thing like?? Glen responded.*
?Cross Country Creek is like the tube ride we took around Typhoon Lagoon, except I understand it runs under a waterfall before passing through a cave-like tunnel that extends beneath Mount Gushmore.?*
?Let?s do that then,? Laine suggested.*
?Yeah, that sounds better,? Caleb and Jamie quickly agreed.*
We spent the next forty minutes leisurely floating around the park on inner-tubes as we enjoyed the wonderful scenery.* There was plenty to see, especially the lush vegetation all along the creek, and we got splashed with ?melting snow? from above as we entered the tunnel under Mount Gushmore.* After we passed through that area, we encountered some other unique scenery as we moved along.* This included the bridges we passed under, the illuminated grottos we floated by, and the bubbling geysers and leaky pipes that got us wet. *We also passed by signs that warned about the ?ice gator?, a local legend, and buildings designed specifically for the ski resort.* It was all very intriguing and relaxing.*
We actually went more than one full circuit around the park before reaching our next location.* I did it this way, otherwise we wouldn?t have allowed our meals time to digest before we went on the next ride.* I felt it was better to do this for longer, than to take the chance of one of the boys losing their meal prematurely.
When I finally signaled the boys that it was time to get off the inner-tubes and join me along the shore, I led them to the chair lift next.* Yes, you read that correctly and we rode on a chairlift to take us up to the top of Mount Gushmore so we could get to the Green Slopes next.*
Each seat on the chairlift can take up to three passengers, and I had the boys observe how the other guests got on first, seeing they?d never done this before.* Once I felt they were ready, I had Laine, Dakota, and Glen go together first, and then I took Jamie and Caleb with me, one on each side.* I thought the design of the chairlift was hilarious, because it made it appear as if those riding on it were wearing skis, which fit the theme of the park perfectly.* However, it looked ridiculous in this heat, but there was an amazing view as we glided above the craggy mountainside.* **
When we reached the top, I called the boys together so we could take a walk around the mountain top first, something that many guests didn?t bother to do.* The mountain is 90 feet (27.5 m) high and we took in the breathtaking views in all directions, and this included the view from the observation deck before I finally led them over to the next attraction, which is on the Green Slopes.* These also happen to be the most intense rides at the park.*

After walking to the top of the mountain, rather than taking the chair lift, we formed a line so we could go one after the other.* After we encountered the first drop, the course then appeared to level off until we reached the next drop.* This happened again a few moments later, seeing there were three drops in all, and each one was a little longer than the one before.* I went last, and when I got to the bottom the boys were waiting for me with huge grins on their faces.*

Each of the waterslides at Runoff Rapids is different and they?re all supposedly propelled by the runoff of the melting snow on Mount Gushmore, so of course the boys wanted to take a turn on each one.* The center waterslide is completely enclosed, although pinholes of sunlight are able to penetrate the darkness as it snakes its way down the slope.* The other two waterslides are completely open and wind their way over, under, and around the center slide, and then they all empty into the same splash pool at the bottom.* Each waterslide is approximately 600 feet (183 m) of twists and turns before it?s over.*
The boys decided to do this in order this time, going from the right, and then the center, and finally the left slide, rather than riding on the two open slides first and then the enclosed one afterward.* Once we?d gone down the first one, we all met up again at the bottom.*

We spent the next forty minutes leisurely floating around the park on inner-tubes as we enjoyed the wonderful scenery.* There was plenty to see, especially the lush vegetation all along the creek, and we got splashed with ?melting snow? from above as we entered the tunnel under Mount Gushmore.* After we passed through that area, we encountered some other unique scenery as we moved along.* This included the bridges we passed under, the illuminated grottos we floated by, and the bubbling geysers and leaky pipes that got us wet. *We also passed by signs that warned about the ?ice gator?, a local legend, and buildings designed specifically for the ski resort.* It was all very intriguing and relaxing.*
We actually went more than one full circuit around the park before reaching our next location.* I did it this way, otherwise we wouldn?t have allowed our meals time to digest before we went on the next ride.* I felt it was better to do this for longer, than to take the chance of one of the boys losing their meal prematurely.
When I finally signaled the boys that it was time to get off the inner-tubes and join me along the shore, I led them to the chair lift next.* Yes, you read that correctly and we rode on a chairlift to take us up to the top of Mount Gushmore so we could get to the Green Slopes next.*
Each seat on the chairlift can take up to three passengers, and I had the boys observe how the other guests got on first, seeing they?d never done this before.* Once I felt they were ready, I had Laine, Dakota, and Glen go together first, and then I took Jamie and Caleb with me, one on each side.* I thought the design of the chairlift was hilarious, because it made it appear as if those riding on it were wearing skis, which fit the theme of the park perfectly.* However, it looked ridiculous in this heat, but there was an amazing view as we glided above the craggy mountainside.* **
